Othakarhaka Foundation

Our Partners

Our work is made possible through the generous support of Community volunteers. These are paid up members from communities under our catchment areas who donate a minimum of K50 per month through their respective village committees. The monies collected are used to support primary school learners and orphans, Othakarhaka tree nurseries, the supporting roofing project and Gender Based Violence campaigns.

K2-Foundation is currently helping us with funding in a palliative care project that we’re undertaking. The organization is also helping 5 other organizations in Malawi K2-NAYO (Blantyre), K2-TASO (Kasungu), Chilanga Health Centre (Kasungu), Ndimoyo Palliative Care Trust (Salima) & Kasina Health facility (Dedza). The K2 Foundation was generous enough to build us an office complex, a cervical cancer screening clinic, buy us a van and hire us a Medical Assistant and a Registered Nurse.

This committee was born 2 years ago after a group of people came to Malawi (as OTK friends led by Dr. Don Thomas, and as Michigan Ross school of business students) and managed to visit Othakarhaka Foundation during their stay in the country. These people were interested in the plight of young Malawians, especially girls who are faced with multiple challenges to get education due to different challenges, ranging from poverty to social-cultural issues in the country. Upon returning to their homes, these individuals decided to set up a fund-raising body so that all they would be consolidating financial assistance they would be getting from their family members, close friends and workmates. Gloria DeCoste was the founding president of the board and the current president is Victor Linares

Under the Girls & women empowerment program, the target is to offer value and meaning to the life of the girl child so that her potentials are enriched. We have hosted three successful 5 days Girls Art Empowerment camps during school holidays (in 2017,2018,2019) where average of 55 girls participated in poetry, dancing, music, English storytelling, girl’s sanitation and many other. Some of the few volunteer teachers who came all the way from USA and launched this program at Othakarhaka are Dr Don Thomas and his two daughters Hilary and Gillian, Gloria DeCoste, Lorna Johnson and many more
