"Passing on the kindness is transforming communities in Malawi."

Celebrating 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence at Othakarhaka in 2023

At Othakarhaka Foundation, we’re proud to stand up against gender-based violence and join the global movement to protect girls and women. This year’s theme, “Invest to prevent violence against women and girls,” profoundly aligns with our commitment to creating a safer world for all.

Our impactful initiative, the Girl Art and Empowerment Camp, stands as a beacon of empowerment for girls in our community. It’s not just a gathering; it’s a platform where our girls learn about their rights, discover their voices, and stand tall against gender-based violence. Recently, we witnessed an inspiring union of girls from different schools at Chambe ground in Mulanje, where they came together to empower one another and raise awareness about the importance of standing up against gender-based violence.

Every girl educated in our community through Othakarhaka’s Girls Education Sponsorship Program is a triumph against early marriage and a future advocate against gender-based violence. Take Tamara, for instance. She was married off at a tender age, enduring abuse. At 22, with three children, she found hope through opportunities offered by Othakarhaka Foundation, including sponsorships, access to a library, and a computer lab.

Today, Tamara rewriting her history, pursuing an Honors Degree in Telecommunication and Electronics Engineering at Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences, thanks to a partnership with I Demand Access.

Tamara’s story is just one of many; girls like Yanjanani Mapira, studying Mechanical Engineering, are trailblazers in their villages, becoming the first to attend secondary school and college, creating a wave of transformation.

Through collaborative efforts with community leaders, dedicated volunteers, and the generous support of our partners, we actively address the challenges faced by these resilient girls. This journey toward a safer and more inclusive future is fueled by the incredible generosity and commitment of individuals like you.

Together, we’re sowing the seeds of empowerment, nurturing resilience, and envisioning a world where every girl thrives without fear. Let’s unite in solidarity against gender-based violence. #16Days #InvestToPrevent #EndGBV #EmpowerGirls #PassingOnTheKindness
